To gain an edge over your competition, it is only wise to start preparing early. Especially for those topics that have a vast syllabus and will take time to master. So, while waiting for the SSC CGL Exam, you can start your preparation because even a small step every day will contribute immensely to your success in the long run.


The SSC online notified the details and requirements of the SSC CGL Exam. The notification has a detailed syllabus for the English language & Comprehension.


Here we are going to discuss the two topics which take some time to master.


One-word substitution


This topic is asked in almost all the competitive examinations like SSC CGL, CHSL, IBPS, SBI, NABARD, RRB, RBI & Stenographer and others so its importance cannot be undermined. This is asked in both tier 1 and tier 2 of SSC which makes it all the more important.


The main issue that most candidates face in this topic is that there are so many words and it seems impossible to learn all of them. The fact is that you don't have to learn all the words.


There are so many sources online that provide an extensive list of commonly asked words and words that are expected to be asked. But simply learning them won't be that effective unless you understand their application in a sentence.


For that, you have to read a lot and when you come across a word you have already learned, it will stick to your memory. Another way is to attempt quizzes on one-word substitution for SSC online.


It will not only help you in retaining what you have learned but the more you practice, the more confident you will get.


Sentence Correction


In this topic, you have to find the error in a part of the sentence and choose the correct alternative from the given options. This topic tests your understanding of grammar and you need to have a stronghold on the basics to ace this topic.


Every word in the English language can be categorized into eight parts which are nouns (name, place, things or ideas), pronouns (he, she, we, etc), verbs (walking, swimming, eating), adjectives (caring, beautiful, generous), adverbs (very, extremely, loudly), prepositions (in, on ,for), conjunctions (and, but, because), and interjections (phew, wow).


A complete sentence contains a subject (someone or something) and a verb (action) and there are certain rules that you should remember which will help in sentence correction. Once you are familiar with all the rules, you can begin doing exercises and remember to give this topic time every day. Again, you need to practice this section consistently to gain mastery of it.


Practice mock tests and previous year exam papers. There are a lot of subscription-based institutions providing quality SSC online tests. Attempt as many as you can and then analyze them to understand which topics are strong and which are weak and allocate time to those topics accordingly.
