Why to opt for PSU exams?

Competitive Exams guide Published on 28 May 2022

PSU (Public Sector Undertakings) are the exams held for aspirants who wish to acquire a job in the public sector. The companies that come under PSU are undertaken by the government. The State and the Central government hold more than 51% share in these government-owned companies. PSU exams are held every year with the aim of providing reputed jobs to candidates. The companies participating in recruitment for PSU jobs are ONGC, BHEL, NTPC, BPCL, CPL power grids, and likes, etc.

One of the biggest advantages is that candidates who clear this exam and get recruited in these companies lead a well-settled life. These companies provide attractive salary packages, job security, an excellent working environment, and an overall good work-life balance. One can expect a salary package starting from 7 lakhs to 12 lakhs per annum which is a handsome amount. Other benefits include Medical allowance, Loans at lower interests, Transport facilities, housing facilities, etc. Hence, the salary packages and the facilities are beneficial as compared to private-sector jobs

Once the candidate is selected through the PSU exam, they are eligible for the position of trainee employee. The candidates are trained under senior officials for 6 months to 1 year. They are then put on probation for the same period and are offered a job after their probation period is completed. The job offer will also depend on the performance of the candidate. The nature of the job roles includes Assistant Engineer trainee, Accounts Officer, Engineer Management trainee, Systems Officer, etc.

Getting a promotion or increment in a PSU job is very transparent and reliable. Candidates who are hard-working and meet targets at the assured time are more likely to get an increment or promotion. The company rewards the deserving candidates with such gestures where they continue to grow. Companies provide opportunities to groom their candidates and also provide them the chance to study further like MBA. They have tie-ups with multiple institutes where they focus on grooming their employees. However, these opportunities are only provided to hard-working, talented and dedicated employees. Also, to get this benefit, candidates must complete a specific tenure at the company. The main motive is that the employees can serve better to the company while promoting their own growth and for the nation as a whole.

Those who have cleared GATE get a respectable position in society. Let’s face it, there are lakhs of aspirants each year who appear for the exam while only some of them are able to clear it. GATE level exams are quite tough and clearing them requires a lot of dedication and effort. Another biggest advantage is that the candidates get to work under senior experts and get exposure to live projects which they can add to their skill. They are told to lead the project so apart from technical skills they get to focus on their managerial skills as well. With all these benefits, it makes it worth opting for PSU exams and getting a job.

One can either apply to PSU exams through GATE or some companies held private exams for the same. However, GATE is the prominent and fair option as only well-deserved candidates can get through the actual recruiting process. The examination prepares the candidate with questions related to general aptitude and technology which tests and increases their knowledge. Also, rather than giving many individual exams, candidates can prepare for just GATE which in turn can save their money.

Once the GATE exam is cleared but the candidates did not get the opportunity or fail to get a PSU job, they can also choose alternate options. One can pursue their PG degree, study or apply in foreign Universities, fellowships in IIMs or CISR or apply for teaching jobs. Clearing this exam leaves the candidates with multiple options so they gain a dual advantage.

Today no private company can guarantee an individual’s job security. Also, with increasing finances, people need a stable source of income to fulfill their day to day needs. Unlike any government sector, the companies recruiting under PSU provides the candidates with such facilities. Hence, clearing a PSU exam can benefit an individual for leading a stable lifestyle.
