Follow-up: Violence in JNU


There have been no arrests so far after vandals broke into the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The incident has been linked as retaliation to anti-CAA protests in Indian universities. 

34 people were injured in the violence

An FIR has been filed against the JNU Students Union Chief.

Delhi polls from Feb 8


The Election Commission has announced Feb 8 as the date for state elections in New Delhi. The counting of votes would occur on Feb 11


Context -


The announcement comes at a time when Delhi is facing a lot of civil unrest due to anti-CAA and NRC protests. EC Sunil Arora hopes that the state machinery could bring the current law and order situation under control in time for the polls.

SC order: Don’t send children excluded from NRC to detention camps


The Supreme Court has ordered that children who are not included on NRC rolls, but have kin who is, should not be separated from their families and sent to detention camps. 


Context:


Assam’s NRC was published on Aug 31 and excluded 19 lakh doubtful voters from the main list. Many of these are children or dependents for people who’ve made it to the final list. An NGO petitioned SC to question the exclusion move. The SC held detaining children as contradictory to Constitution of India’s protections for children under Article 15(3),39,45 and 47 and Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.

Pre-budget consultations on, ministeries ask for more sops


With budget 2020 round the corner, the ministeries for parliamentary affairs, coals and mines have suggested improvements for Railways and service sector among other.

Context:

Budget 2020 will arrive amid an economic slowdown, less jobs and higher unemployment. There are many hopes on how it would battle India’s current economic crisis. Tax reliefs, breaks and sops are also expected.

Trump threatens Iraq with sanctions


Retaliating to the Iraqi parliament’s resolve to remove US troops from the country, US President Donald Trump has threatened the country with sanctions if US is asked to leave.



Context:


Tensions in the region are high after US launched a drone strike against Iranian general Solemani, the head of the Quds force. Iran has vowed severe revenge against US for killing its leader. Iraq, as a neighbour to Iran, may bear the brunt of retaliation against US, if US continues to operate from the region.
