Language is an essential part of all that we do. It defines us as humans. This course deals with the applications of theoretical tools in understanding languages and out come of the analyses of theoretical tools. We aim to have delivered the applications of the fundamental ideas of language to the fields such as language teaching and learning, cognitive science, education, and language disorder and disabilities.

Language and Mind (Video)

Language learning can be put under three broad perspectives. Some believe language is pairing of lexicon and syntax i.e. of words and the set of rules that defines how we can combine those words most fundamental of these rules are innate i.e. they are already there in the human mind before it is exposed to society. This means there is perhaps an innate Language Faculty. Still others believe that General Cognitive Abilities that account for other kinds of learning can also account for language. There are many others who strongly believe that language is essentially socially embedded and that all learning takes place through social interactions. This course will briefly account for the most convincing position and will argue for it from generative perspective and biological foundations of language.

Language and society (Video)

Language is central to our existence. It is hard to think of ourselves, our societies, and culture without language. Language is a primary means of socialization. It interacts with the social, political and economic power structures. It is the primary medium for the construction and transmission of knowledge and for the articulation of ideas. In short, language constitutes humans and their identities. All people either utilize varieties of a language or use two or more languages to respond to a whole range of affective and interpersonal demands; language by definition must be defined as multilingualism. The primary objective of this course is to examine relationship between language and society with respect to the nature of language.
