Cyclone Maha Batters Lakshwadeep and Kerala Coast

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the Maha cyclone is set to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm.

The cyclone has moved past the Lakshwadeep Islands and is likely to cause heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Maharashtra, Lakshwadeep, and Kerala. According to IMD, the fourth cyclone this year, Maha, was centered over the east-central Arabian Sea about 450 km north-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 460 km north-northwest of Mangaluru (Karnataka)

and 310 km south-southwest of Goa on Friday. “Maha is not going to enter Kerala. It will pass by the Kerala coast.

However, there would be heavy wind and rain. So, we have advised people to be cautious,” said Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, who heads the Kerala Disaster Management Authority. KDMA has set up 11 shelter camps in the state and has advised fishermen not to venture out at sea and has put several districts under yellow alert.

An update from the CM's office stated that 1,087 people from 365 families are in these camps. Eighteen houses have been damaged completely in the rain and wind. 120 houses have suffered partial damage too.

Pointing out two cyclones forming at the same time in the Arabian sea, weather expert Rajeevan Erikkulam has said that the Arabian Sea is heating up due to global warming because of which we are likely to witness more cyclones and super cyclones in the coming years.
