Professor Abraham (Avi) Loeb of Harvard University believes that 1I/2017 U1 ‘Oumuamua, a fast-moving, a cigar-shaped object of extrasolar origin discovered close to Earth in October 2017, was most likely ‘a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.’ Oumuamua was discovered by the University of Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on October 19, 2017, more than a month after it passed its closest point to the Sun. “Long before we knew of its existence, the object was traveling toward us from the direction of Vega, a star just 25 light-years away,” Professor Loeb writes in his upcoming book, Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life beyond Earth. “It intercepted the orbital plane, within which all of the planets in our Solar System revolve around the Sun, on September 6, 2017. But the object’s extreme hyperbolic trajectory guaranteed it would only visit, not stay.” “On September 9, 2017, the visitor reached its perihelion, the point at which its trajectory took it closest to the Sun.” “Thereafter, it began to exit the Solar System; its speed far away — relative to our star, it was moving at about 94,800 km per hour (58,900 miles per hour) — more than ensured its escape from the Sun's gravity. It passed through Venus’s orbital distance from the Sun around September 29 and through Earth’s around October 7, moving swiftly toward the constellation Pegasus and the blackness beyond.” Subsequent detailed observations conducted by multiple spaces- and ground-based telescopes detected the sunlight reflected off the surface of ‘Oumuamua. Large variations in its brightness suggested that the interstellar object is highly elongated and up to 275 m (900 feet) in its longest dimension. The object also experienced a small but persistent acceleration that could not be explained simply by the Sun’s gravitational pull. “As soon as the observatory in Hawaii announced its discovery, and even as ‘Oumuamua was fleeing toward the outer Solar System, astronomers around the world trained a variety of telescopes on it. The scientific community was, to put it mildly, curious,” Professor Loeb writes in the book. “One pressing question was: What did ‘Oumuamua look like? We did not, and do not, have a crisp photograph of the object to rely on. But we do have data from all those telescopes that were dedicated for about 11 days to collecting whatever they could.” “And once we had our telescopes trained on ‘Oumuamua, we looked for one bit of information in particular: how ‘Oumuamua reflected sunlight.” “For astrophysicists, an object changing brightness provides invaluable clues to its shape. In the case of ‘Oumuamua, the object's brightness varied tenfold every eight hours, which we deduced to be the amount of time that it took to complete one full rotation,” he adds. “This dramatic variability in its brightness told us that ‘Oumuamua’s shape was extreme, or at least five to ten times longer than it was wide.” “To these dimensions, we added further evidence about ‘Oumuamua’s size. The object, we could say with certainty, was relatively small.”

Some of the ancient grains may have been created by a boom in stars forming in the Milky Way about seven billion years ago. In pieces of a meteorite, scientists have found tiny mineral grains that are older than the Sun and the solar system, which formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Some of these “presolar grains,” the researchers found, are between five and seven billion years old, making them the oldest known materials on Earth. The grains initially formed in interstellar space out of material ejected from mature stars that condensed into dust. The researchers who identified the grains think many of them likely were created following a boom in star formation the Milky Way experienced some seven billion years ago. If confirmed, the new finding demonstrates that researchers can study meteorites to better understand the history of star formation in our galaxy. Rocky records When small to medium stars (from about 0.5 to 5 times the mass of the Sun) approach the ends of their lives, they expand into red giant stars and blow off their outer layers. This results in beautiful, expanding clouds of material that astronomers call planetary nebulae. Over time, the material in these planetary nebulae cools and condenses into grains of dust and minerals. Some of these grains are then incorporated into clumps of interstellar gas, helping form new generations of stars, planets, asteroids and so on. Any presolar grains that were present when Earth first formed are now long gone, changed by our planet’s geologic processes like volcanoes and plate tectonics. But meteorites that fall to Earth from space rocks preserve these cosmic time capsules. Ever since researchers began finding presolar grains in meteorites in 1987, they've studied these ancient relics to find out how old they are and where they came from. Links to the stars In this latest research, a team of researchers led by the cosmochemist Philipp Heck of the Field Museum in Chicago analyzed 50 presolar grains containing a mineral called silicon carbide. The samples came from the famous Murchison meteorite, which fell to Earth in Australia in 1969. When tiny, energetic particles called cosmic rays zip through space, they can strike minerals within rocks like tiny space bullets. This, in turn, causes some of the silicon and carbon atoms in these minerals to fragment into other elements like helium and neon. By measuring how many of these minerals from the Murchison meteorite were transformed into helium and neon, researchers were able to determine how long they had been exposed to cosmic rays, and thus, how old they are. The researchers found that the ages of the silicon carbide grains they studied ranged from roughly the age of the Sun to about three billion years older. Most of these grains were on the younger side, though ⁠— just four million to 300 million years older than the Sun. Heck and his team think the abundance of these relatively young presolar grains might be further evidence that the Milky Way underwent a burst in star formation some seven billion years ago. Through other methods, astronomers have found clues that the Milky Way probably experienced more star formation than average about seven billion years ago. So if you factor in the time it would have taken these stars to evolve into red giants and planetary nebulae, there should be an increase in dust grains that formed just millions of years before the Sun formed, Heck said. “I'm still excited about just the idea of having a rock, taking a rock out of a cabinet, extracting minerals, and learning something about the history of our galaxy,” he said.
