Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with heat and temperature, and their relation to energy, work, radiation, and properties of matter.Chemical engineering thermodynamics is primarily concerned with the application of thermodynamics to phase equilibria and reaction equilibria in multi-component systems and to the calculation of extrem in the work involved in separation processes. Of secondary importance in this context is its application to heat-work inter-conversion devices, which are studied in detail by mechanical engineers. Phase and reaction equilibria involving two or more solid phases are of primary interest to metallurgists.
