World's Tallest Statue. The Maitreya Project is a non-profit organisation that has been in operation since 1990 with the goal of erecting statues of Maitreya Buddha in India and possibly elsewhere. Initially, a 152-metre colossal statue was planned to be built in either Kushinagar or Bodhgaya.
