Developing English Literacy as part of Soft Skills These skills comprise of phonological awareness, fluency, phonics (decoding), comprehension and vocabulary. Being proficient in each of these sub skills is necessary for students to become skilled employer. Through the below mentioned module students will find further informative resources that will help them to prepare and perform well in the literacy professional skills test. The module consists of- a. Pronunciation: • Punctuation marks, • Stress and accents, • Use of words, • Intonation, • Pronouncing simple words and Speech b. Functional Grammar: • Adjectives of comparison, • Transformation of sentences, • Narration, • Voice change, • Spellings, • Change of tense c. Listening: Effectively interpret discussions and conversations related to everyday life, responding to spoken instructions so as to perform requests and commands. • Listening- hearing and listening, effective listening, barriers to effective listening, guidelines for effective listening. • Triple- A Listening- Attitude, Attention & Adjustment. • Active listening skills d. Reading: • Reading and interpreting simple sentences, forms, hoardings, sign boards and notices. • Purpose, skimming (take the best part), scanning (reading with attention). • Reading current news and giving opinions. e. Writing: • Construction of simple sentences. • Writing simple English and preparation- news reports, paragraphs. • Form filling, addressing envelopes. • Layout of letters- Writing requests, simple comprehension. f. Speaking: • Asking and responding to simple questions in English to describe things, people, events and situations. This consists of conversational speaking as well as public speaking. • Get a complete hold on the pace and volume while speaking. • If you are not comfortable with speaking in your personal relationships then practice with a family member or some close friend. • If speaking in public makes you nervous then practice it in smaller groups.
