A quantity having magnitude and direction is not necessarily a vector. For example, time and electric current. These quantities have magnitude and direction but they are scalar. This is because they do not obey the laws of vector addition.

Two cells of equal e.m.f. and of internal resistances R1 and R2 { R2 > R1} are connected in series. On connecting this combination to an external resistance R, it is observed that the potential difference across the first cell becomes zero. The value of R will be

    A

    R1 + R2

    B

    R1 - R2

    C

    (R1 + R2)/2

    D

    (R1 - R2)/2
